Sonderfolge – unser Vortrag, den wir beim Egypopcult-Seminar am 26.1.24 gehalten haben!
„Mummies & Magic – Ancient Egypt in modern Pop culture“ is the name of our German edutainment Podcast-project. Almost two years ago, and in around 40 episodes so far, we shed light on the reception of ancient Egyptian material culture, its social context, and its reception into today’s pop culture. Our project is therefore a unique combination of our expertise in the historical sciences, mainly Egyptology and Archaeology, with nerd culture. From Moon Knight to Agatha Christie, comics, heavy metal music or games, we illuminate how aspects of ancient Egyptian culture are woven into pop culture. In terms of edutainment, it is our intention to share knowledge in an enjoyable way and to make it accessible to the public. We also value our relationship with our listener community, and are working on a constant exchange within social media. We also receive requests for particular topics, and for this paper, we provide a specific example, to demonstrate our podcast-working routine: “Another Pharaoh? On politics, gold and plastic hands” is the name of our 32nd episode dealing with historical novel “Faraon” (1895) by the Polish writer Bolesław Prus and its adaptation as a monumental film in 1966, produced in the former DDR (Eastern Germany). The novel is famous for its historic setting of the late New Kingdom, that was used by Prus to display actual Polish historicity of the late 19th century. Starting with the author’s biography and the political dimension of the novel, we identify amazing Egyptianized film props and settings, a fruitful ground for Egyptomania clichés of the late 60ties. We follow the threads through history ending up in a German science fiction series.
